Your Student Tenancy - The Last 3 Months

01/04/2024

Congratulations! You've officially survived the the majority of your student tenancy. You should be well and truely settled in the property now, but the last quarter is crucial for a smooth end (and a potential return next year!). Here's how to navigate the final three months of your student houses/flats:

Staying Organized:

  • Finances: Review your budget. Factor in any upcoming costs like travel home, end-of-tenancy cleaning, and potential deposits for your next place.
  • Inventory Check: Dust off your tenancy agreement and revisit the inventory check. Make a note of any wear and tear beyond normal living
  • Notice Period: Check your agreement for notice period requirements. Inform your landlord well in advance if you're not returning.

Moving Prep:

  • Deep Cleaning: Landlords typically expect the property to be returned in a clean state. Tackle a deep clean yourself or consider hiring a professional service.
  • Packing: Start packing early, especially if you're heading home for the summer. Sort belongings ruthlessly - be honest about what you'll truly need next year.
  • Maintenance: Make sure any maintenance is reported through to the landlord to get sorted well in advance of moving out.
  • Utilities and Bills: if you havent recently provided a meter read make sure you do so now to ensure you are not stung with a big bill at the end of your tenancy if you have been paying on estimates.
  • Moving Day Plans: Make sure you check the date your tenancy ends..If you are relying on friends and family to help you move make sure you organise this with them in advance to make sure they have the day free!
  • Flat Farewell: Organize a leaving do or a simple get-together to say goodbye to flatmates.
  • Deposits: Understand the deductions process outlined in your tenancy agreement. If you are concerned about any potential deductions make sure you contact your landlord about these.

Top Tips:

  • Communicate: Keep your landlord and housemates informed throughout the process, open communication avoids last-minute hassles.
  • Planning Ahead: If you haven't already make sure to start researching potential accommodation for the next academic year if you plan to return.

By staying organized and following these tips, you can ensure a stress-free end to your student tenancy. Now go forth, conquer those exams, and enjoy the rest of your student term!
